Iron Fist

salt lake city

I really wish my work had job sites in cool cities like Las Vegas or New Orleans or Cancun, but instead we just have an office in Salt Lake City.  After dinner on my second night in town, I found I was getting kind of antsy with being cooped up, and so decided to drive into the city.

I drove around until I found the temple in the middle of town.  Say what you will about the Mormons, but they know how to put up a striking building.  The temple at night was magnificent. My pictures don’t really do it justice.

There was a nice reflecting pool there, too, so I snapped a picture of that:

Right up the street from the temple is the state capitol building. I hadn’t noticed it on my first trip out here a few years ago, but it looked incredible lit up at night so I drove around until I found a spot to park, and then ran up there to stand in the freezing desert wind and snap a few pics:

Later, inexplicably, there were ducks.

And that wraps up the last few days. Is it Friday yet? I could really use some sleep. And when I say sleep really I mean a stiff drink.

At least it’s ducks and not geese. Evil, vile geese.

    Ducks are friendly!

For the love of god, man - slow down! Don’t they have traffic laws in SLC? You’re driving like a maniac!

“Drive fast, speed turns me on…”
(Please don’t ask what is with me and The Fresh Prince lately, haha.)

Ugh! I HATE driving in SLC. It almost never fails that I get lost. I think it’s the most ass-backward, ridiculous moustrap of major highways in the entire United States.

But… that could just be me… haha.

However, the temple IS gorgeous. One of my best friends is Mormon and she just got married last year in the temple (she lives in SLC).

Your pictures are beautiful, as always!

And! Next time you go to SLC for business you should totally let me know! It’s only a 6 hour drive from where I live and I would have no problems driving it. It would be so much fun to meet you and hang out! :)

There’s a brewpub maybe a mile from the temple — Squatters, I think, is the name of it? — next time in SLC, check it out. They’ve got Polygamy Porter, etc — worth it even if just for the names.

thanks for the pictures. i had a friend in Salt Lake City (deceased now) who worked at the university and he’d go on and on about how lovely it actually was. i don’t know that i’ve ever seen a pic of the temple.

    again, thanks.

We toured the kids through Temple Square on our way to the Grand Canyon last Spring. It really is impressive architecture. Great photos!

I think your company should open a Wenatchee office. Heck, we’re almost as ‘wholesome’ as SLC, plus we’re way closer to Portland. See? I have all the answers if anyone would just ask the right questions…

kapgar, these were friendlier than most, until they realized I wasn’t going to feed them.

jenny, although they’re pretty strict about alcohol, mormon traffic enforcement is extremely lax.

a lewis, I didn’t but next time I’ll try to get one signed for you.

hilly, seriously, what is it with you and the fresh prince lately?

amber, clearly you’ve never been to los angeles.

matt, I’ll have to check it out! always love a good beer.

crys, I only with I’d brought my big camera and a tripod with me. the temple is incredibly striking at night.

shari, I agree! I’ll write to the company president and tell him our services are urgently required in eastern Washington.
