server trouble

For some odd reason commenting isn’t working today. I’ll poke around the back end of my site and see if I can’t figure out why.

Update: Okay, it works now. For those of you really interested in the nerdy nuts-and-bolts, they changed the domain name for the user webspaces on the CS server, which was causing a conflict of some sort, which was solved by me amending my database. Ahem.

100 year anniversary of the San Francisco Quake

Today marks the 100 year anniversary of San Francisco getting hosed by the San Andreas Fault. Over at Yahoo news I found a link to a site that features some interesting tales from the quake.

The 1906 quake is the most famous and the most damaging earthquake to his America since the white man set up shop here. Of course, most of the damage from the earthquake came from the fires that started afterwards and burned for days. And here’s something interesting I learned recently: apparently after the earthquake, there were only a few fires burning, and people’s houses were trashed, and some wiseass somewhere (we’ll never know who) pointed out that homeowner’s insurance didn’t cover earthquake damage, so if you wanted to get money from your insurance company to get your house rebuilt, you had to set it on fire. And so he did. The idea caught on, and more people started torching their own houses for the payout, until…well, until the city burned down.

Probably didn’t seem like such a good idea at that point.

A view from my window

As I get settled into my new digs, I thought I’d put a couple of pictures up of the view from out of my window.

Here’s one facing east, down Columbia Street:

And here’s another one looking almost straight out (my apartment faces north):

North

Squeezed between that blue building and the one that’s sort of green around the top is Vernon’s apartment window. You’re just going to have to trust me on this.

More of my stupid pictures

Inspired by my rad friend Sibyl, I started my own photostream at Flickr. I did this largely because Flickr is now a free service of Yahoo!, and hence required almost no effort on my part to do.

There’s only a few up right now. Look for it to be updated randomly and infrequently…uh, not unlike this site, I guess.

Actually, this is already three posts for today, so I guess I’m not doing so bad, right? Right?

Well, whatever.

Got Squid?

I don’t know how else to describe this site, other than by saying this dude is really into squid. That’s not a slangy reference to anything, by the way. Described as the “blog for all things squid,” this is literally just a blog about…squid.
