Monday morning found me slouching in front of my PC at work, sipping on my coffee and wondering why anyone bothered with a three-day work week. Couldn’t we just have the whole thing off?
One of my coworkers popped into the closet where I work. “Hey, how’s it going? I haven’t even had a chance to say hi to you yet.”
“Morning, morning.”
“Do anything exciting this weekend? You usually have entertaining stories.”
Ah, and now we come to my true job description: I am a dancing monkey, here to entertain people. “Yeah, I got to hang out with my giant Swedish friend. I haven’t had a chance to see her in about a year.”
He grinned. “Your giant Swedish friend?”
“Yep. 188 cm tall, dude, you’d better believe she could F you up if she wasn’t such a sweet-natured Scandinavian. And check it, homie: she’s famous.” With this I reached over to my keyboard and ran a search on her. “See?”
“Huh,” he said, inspecting the incontrovertible evidence of the Internet. “So she is. How is it you get to know a world-famous volleyball playing Swede?”
“Well, you see, I –” and I launched into my improbable (but absolutely true) tale of how my friend had dated her when they’d both attended Montana State U. for their freshman year, before he’d transferred to Portland State and she to U of Hawaii, and how they’d maintained a relationship across the miles and time zones for years and were still good friends. She’d been training in Brazil for the last year to compete in the Olympics in beach volleyball, and after some time off from training spent with her family in Stockholm, she was on her way back to Brazil via a stopover in Hawaii. And, of course, Portland. And a McMenamins.
It was good to catch up, good to see that she was still chasing her dream of competing in the Olympics. She’d gotten a little sidetracked in a few other areas in her life, but don’t we all? What matters is that she’s still moving forward with her life while trying to correct those things that had gone awry. And I’m glad to count her among my friends.
She left yesterday morning, to visit her friends in Hawaii, before continuing her journey to Olympic gold. Vernon, who refused to be photographed, left early this morning for a trip to India.
Safe travels to both of you, my friends.
